One thing I figured out too slowly for my own good when I first moved to Japan was the value of coins. As an American, I was wired to think that Money is paper and coins are just what you keep on hand in case your paper doesn’t add up nicely enough. In Japan, though, the equivalent of a one dollar bill (or, by today’s exchange rate, a $1.30 bill) is a coin. The new expat (read: me)...
